Do You Need The Time Capsule?

There is a fancy harddrive from Apple called “Time Capsule” – what is that?

First of all it is from Apple and it definitely looks good 😀 But the second thing is that once configured you never ever need to care about backups anymore. These were firstly 2 good reasons for me to check that thingy out. I showed it to my husband and he got it for me (yes, I know mostly I have a nice husband 😉 ) So when the package arrived, I set it up downstairs and tried to connect it with my Mac in my office upstairs. It was easy – once those two connected the Time Machine (which is the automatic backup program from Apple also included in the operating system) started and backed up – the first time I think I should have better done it by cable because it took my poor Mac forever – I have over 400 GB of stuff on my computer so a backup by cable wouldn´t have taken days.

But once that was done I was done thinking of backups.

Now Time Machine starts in the background and backs up any new file, picture, document, song or whatever I get on my computer. It does its job while I do my job spamming my computer 😉 But it can do more.

Do you have two computers?

The good thing is even then you don´t need two Time Capsules. Two or more computers, even your iPod or iPhone, can share the Time Capsule. You can even connect a Windows Computer to your Time Capsule. The only thing which is different there – it doesn´t have Time Machine. The Time Machine is the program which makes the backups for you. Once you need a file you´ve accidently deleted or once you have a harddrive failure – you can just “go back in time” and get your files back.

So – that´s all I need?

Definitely yes. The Time Capsule is pricy but it´s well worth the money. Your data is worth a lot of money thinking of the hours you put into the creation. And nothing is worse than losing all your cherished family photos. But I don´t wanna hold back from you that you could also get a normal external harddrive – any kind of – and connect it to your Mac. It´s just less fancy and it´s not wireless. Also it most probably has not the other great features the Time Capsule offers.

Here are all features at a glance:

  • Automatic wireless backups
  • Built-in 1 TB hard drive (you can also get in 2 TB)
  • Simultaneous dual-band support for 802.11b/g and 802.11n
  • USB 2.0 port for sharing a hard drive or printer
  • Three Gigabit Ethernet ports
  • shares printer and additional harddrives with USB Port
  • works with Mac and PC

What do others say?

There are a ton of customer reviews on Amazon and the product has 4.5 out of 5 possible stars.

“Really Great Product!

“Apple has done it again!”

Fantastic Product, Fantastic Company”

“I bought this for our family home wireless network. It backs up three computers and is our wireless router and as with many Apple products, it just works.”

My Conclusion:

As so many things in life you do not really need THAT one – but once you have it you´ll love it! And in my eyes the additional features and the good feeling that you can forget backing up your system are well worth to spend some more dollars on the Time Capsule.
