Fantastical (Review)

iCal is a simple application on your Mac that is capable of managing and creating events easily. However, there is an app that enhances its capabilities. It is similar to iCal but it is more intuitive, more flexible and gives you more options to customize your events.  Flexbits, the creator of Fantastical offers a free trial for 14 days. You can download the full version on Flexbits. This way you can try it out before you buy.

Download and Setup Fantastical

To have a better understanding of this application you will need to download and install the free trial. After you complete the installation, you will need to set it up.

  1. To set up Fantastical, open it up from your Applications folder.  A setup box will appear.
  2. You will need to choose a calendar application to use. Setup the application according to your preference.
  3. Then, click on done to finish the setup.

When you are done setting up Fantastical, the application will be installed on the taskbar, located at the top of your screen. It should look like the following image.

 

  1. Just click on it to open.
  2. All your events will appear below the calendar, like in the image below

 

 

Adding an Event in Fantastical

  1. To add an event in Fantastical, just select the date on the calendar and type the event in the text box.
  2. An event dialog box will appear with a list of options for your event. You can edit the options based on your preference.
  3. When you are done, click on the Add Eventbutton to add the event.Adding an Event in Fantastical

    Additional Options 

    Fantastical also gives you additional options to enhance your calendar, through Preferences. It is located in the Settings section at the bottom right of the app. It looks like the following gears image.

    1. When you click on the Settings button, scroll down to Preferences.
      There are 4 options available in Preferences, General, Calendar, Alarms and Update.

          1. You can change the calendar and add shortcuts in the General option.
          2. The Calendar option allows you to change the appearance, format the date and time as well as determine which calendar to use.
          3. You can also set alarms for timed and all day events in the Alarms option.
          4. Finally, the Updateoption allows you to check for updates.Fantastical is a great enhancement to your current calendar. Even though it is $19.99, it is a small price to pay for a calendar that is like a personal assistant.You can find Fantastical at the Mac App Store:
