How To Get Spaces In The Dock

Make spaces in the dock

Prepare for the spaces in the Dock

I´ve seen this already in some videos but I never could figure out how to do it – empty spaces in the dock to sort the icons. When you have the code it´s really easy to do! Here is step by step what you do:

1. Click on your magnifier in the top right corner, type in Terminal

Find your Terminal

2. Click the item “Terminal” and a window opens:

The open Terminal Window

Your window will look similar, of course with your name 😉

3. Copy and paste the following text into the window to finally get a space in your dock:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{tile-data={};
tile-type="spacer-tile";}'

then press enter and type:

killall Dock

Your dock disappears for a minute and then it has a space – you can move it around as you like and you can also repeat the process to have more spaces. Here is how it looks like:

You can sort your items in groups like administrative tasks, internet, image editing, fun, music – whatever you like 🙂

For all those who enjoy videos more or are complete newbies in this area I recorded all this in a video (you just need to watch if you can’t work out the tutorial as it is completely the same).

Here a video on how to get spaces into your Dock:
