The New Macbook Pro With Retina Display

Macbook Pro with Retina DisplayHeld last June 2012, the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) is one of the most important events for developers and Apple alike. This year, the Cupertino-based company definitely did not disappoint. For many, it was akin to celebrating Christmas in June. There was an announcement on the new OS X Mountain Lion, and on the forthcoming iOS 6.  The excitement was at an all-time high when the Apple portables all got a refresh. While the updates to the Macbook Pro and the Macbook Air lines were significant, the star of the show was undoubtedly the launch of the all new Macbook Pro with Retina Display (MBPr).

Touted as the thinnest and lightest Macbook Pro ever, the 15-inch MBPr is definitely noticeably lighter than the pro models. Make no mistake though, it still feels solid and well-built. Since it is only available as a 15-inch model, some people might find the size prohibitive. Nevertheless, it is still amazing how they were able to pack so much features in that size and weight.

The amazing feature of the MBPr is definitely the screen. The retina display packs more than 5 million pixels into the 15-inch screen.  That’s a 2880×1800 resolution! It’s amazing to see up close. The colors are definitely richer, the images sharper.  IPS technology allows the screen to be viewed up to 178 degree angle which is great for collaboration.

The Macbook Pro Retina is certainly one of the heavyweights when it comes to its powerhouse. It takes advantage of the processing speed of the newest generation Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge processors. The entry-level MBPr comes with a 2.3GHz i7 processor that can Turbo Boost up to 3.3 GHz while the top of the line model has an jaw-dropping 2.6GHz i7 processor that can reach 3.6GHz. Benchmarks have these processors as eons faster than last year’s models. To drive graphics seamlessly, the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M graphics processor has 1 GB of dedicated video memory. This is definitely a must for the Retina display.

The MBPr also comes with an all flash storage. This gives it significant a performance boost over the traditional hard drive. You do have to think carefully on the size of the storage because it cannot be upgraded. Flash storage begins at 256GB expandable up to 768GB.

Being that this is a pro machine, numerous ports are expected. The new MBPr comes with two Thunderbolt ports, Apple’s proprietary port that is able to transfer data at lightning speed. These ports can also be used to connect to an external display such as a much larger screen. Two USB 3 ports, the long-awaited HDMI port and a card reader for an SDXC complete the port lineup. Legacy Mac users will probably bemoan the loss of FireWire and Ethernet ports but adapters are available.

At a starting price of $2199, the new Macbook Pro with Retina Display is certainly not the cheapest notebook out there, but it is definitely the most cutting-edge and the most feature-rich. This is certainly one professional tool that anybody would enjoy using.
